We had a great time at the Gifts that Give Hope Lancaster Fair Oct. 10. We are grateful to the organizers for their hard work in making it happen, and we especially thank those we met and those who may have contributed. Hope to see you next year!
On beautiful Oct. 3, we were fortunate to have veteran volunteers and a few newbies to help. Thanks to Truck Captain Jackie for her excellent skills, Andy, Brad B, Tom, Denise, Alicia and Matt, Ann, Brad K, Rocky and Donald. We were scheduled to assist three families but one Move is on hold until the home is ready for occupancy. We split into two groups for Moves in Neffsville and Lancaster City. A couple and their daughter are off to a new beginning in a third floor apartment with narrow hallways and steep stairways that challenged us. Luckily, we found a futon in our warehouse. Space would not allow a dining table and chairs, but two tall counter stools for the kitchen island solved that. Both bedrooms needed beds and dressers, making size and weight a great consideration. Twin and full-size mattresses were delivered up a fire escape. Beds got sheets and comforters, and the bathroom a shower curtain, towels and rug. Previewers returned Monday to hang curtains in the windows facing the busy street. Area rugs and lamp lent warmth to the apartment. Mom was grateful for even small things like the first aid kit, laundry basket and hangers,
Somehow this report got missed, so we want to post it now for those great folks who helped with Moves on September 19, which was for two families instead of our routine three. Previewers said it “felt like old times!” Headed by truck captain Keith & Van Driver Brad, lifters packed two vans in record time. Thank you Keith, Brad, Ann, Ted, Jim, Pastor John, Faith, Erin, Gail, Mike, Eric, Willy & Brook. You’re hard workers and fun to work with! Thank you to previewer Robin for filling in for us during the week. Our first young lady had been in rehab and was sharing a house with 3 roommates. We gave her 4 chairs for the kitchen table already there. In the living room, a chair, end table, coffee table, TV & lamps were all she needed. She already had a bed, so we provided linens & pillows, dresser, nightstand, lamp, storage unit and small fridge. Curtains for privacy & a small rug made her small space feel like home. Our second lady was sweet and shy; she simply smiled the whole time we were bringing in furniture to fill her empty apartment. Homeless for 15 years, she had

Our first move September 26 was to a single mom with 2 children to an apartment in Umbrella Works in Lancaster. We sure appreciated the elevator there which just fit the sofa; otherwise we would have carried it to the third floor. The family received a sofa, chair, coffee table, dresser, nightstand, lamps, microwave and vacuum. They already had dishes and flatware but we provided cooking utensils and pans for baking. On the second move, we assisted a single female. She received a dresser, small recliner, bedside table, plastic storage unit, lamps, hangers and laundry basket. She, also, had dishes and flatware and requested cooking utensils, knives, bakeware and a tea kettle. She loves to cook and as soon as we entered her apartment, we could smell a delicious chicken dish baking in the oven. She refused our offers to help with moving her furniture around saying that she couldn’t wait to put on some of her music and have fun decorating it herself! Our third move was to a couple living in a second floor apartment. This was tricky as it had a narrow staircase and a quick turn into their apartment at the top of the stairs. We
We find ourselves this week in need of small dressers (5 foot or less) and tall dressers. If you can help please fill out the form found in the comments, and we will be in touch. These pictures show the kind of dressers best suited to small apartments. Thank you!
What a great crew we have in our warehouse on Wednesdays. They check, sort, package and store; they assemble living needs kits and cleaning buckets, and Mary creates that great bulletin board. Wednesdays 9-11am are donation drop-off times. Directions to the warehouse are in the comments. Thank you!
Definitely plan to attend this event. We will be there, and we would love to talk to you about how we help people transition into permanent homes after living on a couch, in a shelter, a motel or outside. Mark your calendar!
